I have been in love with, and immersed in, business development since completing my degree in Economics some 25 years ago. I am a bit astounded when I read "25 years". It's interesting indeed when you start to divide your life into 25 year increments.

After completing my university degree, I spent 20 years in business development with Microsoft and IBM. At Microsoft I was employee #2 in Western Canada. My team was busy building new offices out of thin air, customer relationships where none existed, and wholesale and retail distribution networks from the ground up. It was a very exciting time and my office walls became covered with coveted "Star of the Month" and "Star of the Quarter" awards.
 
Then, I joined IBM, and once again I found myself totally immersed in "entrepreneurial pursuits" within a large corporate environment. One of my most important roles was to build and "sell" an internal business plan that would attract funding from IBM's top executives. The "business with IBM" was the Canadian Multimedia Development Center. Myself, and a team of talented folks, were successful and with IBM itself as the "venture capital" provider, the Multimedia Development Center was funded, staffed, and launched. I effectively built my own job...an active and rewarding business development role.
 
Even with all that entrepreneurial experience and expensive business development training, when I started my own business I was in for a few really big surprises.
 
In my first new venture my business partner was responsible for the technical aspects of our new Internet communications company which we launched before the Internet was well established. We scraped together about $10,000 to purchase the required system to deliver our first product offering. While my business partner was responsible for building the solution we would deliver to customers, I had sole responsibility for everything else: sales, marketing, bookkeeping and finance, billing, media relations, advertising, receivables, payables, human resources, buying the paperclips and taking out the trash.
 
We grew the business, secured a gold-plated list of global customers, hired talented staff, and outsourced services. We raised cash, brought in investors, successfully launched an IPO, and took the company public. It was a wild, fun, exhausting, and scary ride.

It was the toughest and most educational experience of my life! I learned the hard cold facts of developing a successful business.
